Square Sounds Melbourne is a 4 day microfestival held locations in and around inner Melbourne, with it’s core base being one of Melbourne’s best known and most beloved live music venues - The Evelyn Hotel.
Defined by its focus on the underground chipmusic scene and coloured by the vibrant sights and sounds of an 8-bit palette mixed with cutting edge bass music; Square Sounds brings some of the best known and loved chiptune artists from all over the world to Melbourne. Many acts play their first and only Australian shows on the Square Sounds stage for the benefit of an ecstatic crowd.
In addition to the main stage, Square Sounds showcases up and coming artists at it’s open mic and helps educate new and existing performers in the artistry of chipmusic at its workshops. Square Sounds is also one of the only festivals of its size featuring international visualists on its line up, as part of its commitment to a truly audio-visual experience.
This vibrant and inclusive event, (along with its sister-show in Tokyo) is a linchpin of the international 8-bit music scene, and has hosted such chipmusic talent as Chipzel (IE) Trash80 (US), Sabrepulse (UK) and Toriena (JP); as well as less purely 8-bit focused talent like Doshy (DE); and locals making their mark on a global stage like 7 Bit Hero (QLD).
Unlike anything else happening in Australia, Square Sounds (and its related events Blip Festival Australia and SoundBytes) have been featured and involved in tv, radio and events nationwide including Triple J, ABC’s Good Game and Good Game Spawn Point, PAX, AVCON and many more.
